The Division of Politics, Administration & Justice invites Criminal Justice students to consider these awards.

The awards vary in purposes, eligibility requirements, selection criteria and award items so please read the detailed descriptions to determine if a particular award is right for you.

Remember, these awards are competitive so, if required, submit materials that are complete and reflect your best work.

Undergraduate Students

THE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD

This award is given to a graduating student whose overall academic performance, including but not limited to courses in the major, distinguishes him or her as intellectually outstanding. Selection procedure: Faculty select one student with the highest major or overall GPA.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP & ACTIVITIES AWARD

This award is given to a graduating student in Criminal Justice who excels in service to the field of Criminal Justice, including success in community work, internships or service to the CSUF Criminal Justice Department or University. Application procedure: Applicants must prepare an essay of no more than 500 words describing their service activities. Applications will be accepted in the spring semester (February to April). The award recipient is selected by the Criminal Justice Awards Committee. 

THE EDWARD SULLIVAN AWARD

The department scholarship was established by Dr. Ed Sullivan in order to assist adult re-entry students majoring in Criminal Justice. The scholarship seeks to reward students returning to complete their education. Currently enrolled non-traditional students who are in good academic standing and will return to CSUF for at least one additional semester. Typical characteristics of a non-traditional student can be one or all of the following—(1) a parent, (2) twenty-five years of age or older, and (3) a veteran—and must have delayed enrollment or took a break from higher education.  Applicants must submit a personal statement and a copy of their unofficial transcripts at CSUF. In the personal statement, please tell us about yourself and your future goals. Please limit your narrative to 1 page and include how this scholarship will allow you to continue your educational or career goals in the future. Include any other relevant information to your application for this scholarship. The award recipient is selected by the Criminal Justice Awards Committee. 

THE HOBBS DERY AWARD

Named after a Criminal Justice professor, this award is given to a graduating undergraduate student who has a primary interest in the study of law. Selection procedure: Division faculty with a special interest in law will select the student who demonstrated the highest level of excellence in law related coursework and activities while at CSUF based on “a totality of the circumstances approach.” 

BOOKSTORE SCHOLARSHIP - STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP

Undergraduate students in Criminal Justice who have applied for a CSUF study abroad course and is in financial need with at least a 2.75 GPA may apply. Application procedure: Criminal Justice students must have applied for a CSUF study abroad course, have a GPA of 2.75 or higher, and demonstrate a financial need to help subsidize program cost.  Applications will be accepted in the spring semester for planned study abroad courses planned in the summer, fall, intersession, or following spring semester. Applicants must prepare an essay of no more than 500 words describing how the program will “benefit your academic and professional development, your financial need/challenges, and explain how scholarship funds would support your ability to reach your goals.” The award recipient is selected by a panel of Criminal Justice Awards Committee. 

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR AWARD

Alumni of the Criminal Justice program (post 5 years of graduation date) are eligble. The recipient of this award is selected and recognized for his/her professional contribution to the Criminal Justice field and involvement, contribution, and/or service to CSUF or the Criminal Justice Department. Selection procedure: Alumni are nominated by the criminal justice faculty and the award recipient is selected by the Criminal Justice Awards Committee.
